At this years annual poster presentation of the Advanced Materials and Science masters-programm, Lukas was awarded the best poster prize for the presentation of his work on synthetic opals. Besides, Nicolas received the best-lecturer-award as voted by the MAP students. Congratulations to both!
Marcel successfully defended his PhD thesis on 6 of December 2019 and received his doctor title. Dr. Marcel Rey is now the first PhD from the Vogel lab. Congratulations! We wish Marcel all the best for his future career.

A new collaborative research center, funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) has been granted to an interdisciplinary team of scientists at FAU, headed by Prof. Wolfgang Peukert. The center will focus on the scalable design of advanced particulate materials to be used as optical materials and to establish a technological approach towards chromatographic separation of nanoparticles. The first Symposium of the joint project Baybionik by StMUV took place at October 17. Teresa presented our contribution to the world of slippery surfaces based on the pitcher plant.
Teresa and Salvatore presented at the event “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften” on October 19 at Bionicum in Nuremberg. With the title “Let’s slip together with the pitcher plant!” they explained to the public audience, how they could make surfaces slippery. After the presentation, the public could do some exciting experiments and see how ketchup and red wine droplets slide down the slippery substrates in practice.
Three of our PhD candidatiates, Marcel, Junwei and Johannes, are presenting their work at the poster presentation of this years’ Particle Based Material Symposium at University of Ulm. We had a lot of fun while presenting. Eric presented our recent work on site-specific functionalisation of plasmonic nanostructures during his talk. More infos can be found here.
Our result on the free energy landscape of colloidal clusters, in collaboration with Engel’s and Spiecker‘s group, is featured on this month’s cover of ACS Nano. Congratulations, Junwei!
Junwei presented a poster on colloidal clusters in spherical confinement at the Gordon Conference (soft matter physics) in New London, USA. He also presented his research on confined colloid self-assembly in a special Kavli seminar at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in Harvard University, and in the research group of Mathias Kolle in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT.
On August 8, the annual outing of Vogel lab took place in the beautiful region of Franconian Switzerland in Bavaria. Thank you all for joining and making it a memorable day!
Teresa‘s research with the title “Cell interaction with nanostructured surfaces for bone tissue engineering” was selected as the second best poster in Zsigmondy colloquium 2019 and won the prize. Congratulation Teresa!
Together with the groups of Michael Engel and Erdmann Spiecker, we have advanced the understanding of the structure, defect accumulation and thermodynamics of colloidal clusters on and off magic numbers. Read all details here….
Vogel’s lab shared his recent findings with the German colloidal society at Zsigmondy colloquium 2019. Reza, Eric, Teresa and Salvatore presented their work during the colloquium which took place on July 10-12 in Dresden.
At the closing event of the project course in chemical and process engineering (CBPT), group 28, consisting of Harald Heier, Leonie Knott, Patricia Schmul and Sebastian Weigelt, supervised by Salvatore Chiera and Herbert Canziani won the 1st poster price on the topic of bio-inspired surface design. Congratulation to the group!

Atsushi Fujiwara visits our group to work on the fabrication of supraparticles from January to March. Atsushi is a PhD student from Japan in the group of Prof. Satoshi Watanabe at Kyoto University, whose work focuses on the synthesis and properties of metal organic framework nanoparticles. This is the second visit of Atsushi to Erlangen as a result of a German-Japan international collaboration project funded by the German Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Auslandsdienst, DAAD).
